Fellow Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island Patrollers
My 2008-2009 activity report as EMARI Assistant Region Director (ARD):
- My home NSP ski area was Wachusett where I patrolled as a Senior Alpine Volunteer Patroller 4-10 PM Thursdays.
- Although she needed little assistance I gave some help to Carrie Nally to prepare for the first Monday in February 2009 Alumni Day at Wachusett. Due to my work schedule I was not able to attend. Reminder, this season the Alumni Day will be the first Monday, February 1, 2010.
- Represented EMaRI at the Eastern Division annual business meeting in Albany, New York May 1-3, 2009. Formal duties included committee meetings, voting on the annual budget and voting on changes to the by-laws.
- Still a member and available when asked to serve on the Eastern Division Risk Management and Legal Committee.
- A member of the Eastern Division Mountain Travel and Rescue Committee.
- Participated in the EMaRI Senior EMM clinic process, January 31, 2009 evaluation at Wachusett as a T/E and was successful at the T/E refresher May 9, 2009.
- Attended the annual Mountain Travel Rescue, Avalanche and Nordic instructor meeting September 19-20, 2009 at Northfield, Massachusetts with the EMaRI MTR/Avalanche advisor Richard “Dick” Townsend and EMaRI MTR candidate instructor Perry “Buz” Fowler. We currently have three EMaRI NSP MTR candidate instructors.
- As the instructor of record I supported the Eastern Division “within 100 miles” local training effort by holding an NSP MTR1 #15379 course at Ski Bradford Resort & Ski School November 8-9, 2008. It also furthered the personal development of four EMaRI, two New Hampshire, and two Maine NSP MTR candidate instructors. Bradford’s PD Dennis Gauvin was a most gracious host. The NSP MTR1 course expects to return to Bradford in November 2010. Pictures are on the EMaRI web photo gallery.
- With the New Hampshire Region MTR Advisor Eric Zaharee I assisted with the Eastern Division MTR2 #15876 course January 24-25, 2009 and February 27-March 1, 2009 at Ragged Mountain and Mt. Moosilauke in New Hampshire. Pictures are on the EMaRI web photo gallery.
- As the instructor of record I am again supporting the Eastern Division “within 100 miles” local training effort by planning to hold an NSP MTR1 #17148 course at Yawgoo Valley November 21-22, 2009. It will also further the personal development a number of NSP MTR candidate instructors. Previous course pictures are on the EMaRI web photo gallery.
- I was asked to fill in for ARD Mike Seward at the EMaRI Family Weekend at Black Mountain, New Hampshire and attended March 14-15, 2009. The PD Dave Aibel was a gracious host. Pictures are on the EMaRI web photo gallery.
- Completed the NSP Avalanche level 2 course March 20-22, 2009 at Whiteface, New York taught by the NSP Nordic Master Charles “Chuck” Boyd. Chuck has summited Mt. Everest and K2.
- Pro Prices: For those areas that don’t have ski shop arrangements we continue with STRANDS in Worcester to honor your service with pro prices upon proof of NSP registration. Thank you Leif and Roy. Visit Strands Online http://www.strandsskishop.com
- I continue to answer the questions of patrollers that want to continue as patrollers but need to first earn a living in order to volunteer.
Have a safe risk managed and fun ski and snowboard season.

John Caron
