ASSISTANT REGIONAL DIRECTOR, John Caron - News (September 19, 2007)

Fellow EMARI Patrollers:

My 2006-2007 activity report as Assistant Region Director:

  • Pro Prices: For those areas that don’t have ski shop arrangements we continue with STRANDS in Worcester to honor your service with pro prices upon proof of NSP registration. I was able to give Leif an Eastern Division recruiting poster. Thank you Leif and Roy. Visit Strands Online
  • My assigned ski areas were Wachusett where I patrol 4-10 PM Thursdays, Ski Ward I visited on two beautiful February days (see pictures of John, Janet and Marc), and Pine Ridge that didn’t open this past season although I talked with Laurie when she skied while chaperoning students Thursdays at Wachusett.
  • I helped Carrie Nally prepare for the first Monday in February 2007 Alumni Day at Wachusett. Due to schedules I was not able to attend. Again this season the day will be the first Monday, February 4, 2008. It will be the day before her birthday. You’ll have to ask which birthday yourselves since it use to not be polite but if you’re old enough to still do math in your head (100-20=?).
  • Represented EMaRI at the Eastern Division annual meeting in Albany, New York May 4-6, 2007. Formal duties include committee meetings, voting on the annual budget and voting on amendments to the Eastern Division by-laws.
  • Did my best to publish the Massachusetts Winter Special Olympics. Our EMaRI volunteers for two weekend days included Janet Read, Tom Flynn and Sue Flynn.
  • Checked in with Certified advisor Dave Walker and we agreed I’d support his budget requests.
  • Still a member and available when asked to serve on the Eastern Division Risk Management and Legal Committee.
  • A new member of the Eastern Division Mountain Travel and Rescue Committee.
  • Participated in the EMaRI SR EMM clinic process and January 6, 2007 evaluation as a TE.
  • Attended the annual MTR, Avalanche and Nordic instructor meeting September 8-9, 2007 at Northfield, Massachusetts with the current EMaRI MTR/Avalanche advisor Dick Townsend, past EMaRI MTR/Avalanche advisor Greg Banner and EMaRI candidate MTR instructor Robert “Jim” Thevenet. We currently have three EMaRI candidate MTR instructors.
  • To support Gerry Hyson’s good works I participated at the Eastern Division Student Seminar as an OEC evaluator March 16-18, 2007. I had the opportunity to be teamed with the Southern New York Region Director Meg Smith and evaluate a bumper crop of the smartest and nicest bunch of Student Patrollers.
  • Participated at the nearly twelve hour marathon Maine Senior EMM as an evaluator March 25, 2007. I thought it went well (kudos Billy). I was successfully teamed again this season with the New Hampshire Sr EMM Coordinator Gerry Clark.
  • I attended the NSAA Winter Summit at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire September 5-6, 2007 for two days of risk management and NSP seminars. While there I also met the new NSP Executive Director Tim White and spoke with the Eastern Division Director Rick Hamlin.
  • As the instructor of record I am currently supporting the EMaRI effort to hold an MTR1 #13801 course at Yawgoo Valley November 10-11, 2007 to further the personal development of three EMaRI MTR candidate instructors.
  • I was honored to be invited and attend the Ski Ward remembrance for Edward B. Pickering as both a friend of Ed’s and the Ski Ward EMaRI ARD.
  • Plan to continue to server the patrollers of the EMaRI region for the remainder of my second term.

If you’ll indulge me, what I ‘d like to remember of the 2006-2007 season was some great Spring skiing. We won’t dwell on the late start and poor weather. This 2007-2008 season when the snow does come again I will remember the passing of fellow patrollers because I was privileged to have known them.

Have a safe risk managed and fun ski and snowboard season.

Regards,

John Caron
