INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT - Program
The next EMARI Instructor Development class is being held on Monday & Wednesday evening April 6th & 8th, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM at Mount Wachusett Ski Area (Main Lodge) Princeton, MA. This class is open to any patroller that is interested in becoming an NSP instructor.
What:
Instructor Development (ID) is a required course for NSP patrollers that have an interest in becoming an Instructor in the NSP organization. A patroller that wants to become an instructor in Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC), Skiing & Toboggan (S&T), Skier Enhancement, Toboggan Instruction, or Mountain Travel and Rescue (MTR) must first take Instructor Development. ID can also be taken as a Senior Elective for those patrollers that are not sure about becoming instructors, but want to learn more about the program and get an elective in the process.

ID is typically offered in the EMARI Region about twice a year or as demand requires. In the past 18 months more than 50 patrollers from the EMARI region and from outside of EMARI have completed Instructor Development.

There are two alternatives for patrollers that want to take ID, either to become an instructor or to get a Senior elective. You can either attend the April ID class being offered at Wachusett Mountain, or you can take a self-paced, CD-based Instructor Development course. While either alternative meets NSP requirements and counts as a Senior elective, the classroom ID course is a much better way to go, especially if you do plan on becoming an instructor.

When:
April 6th & 8th
Monday & Wednesday evenings

Where:
Mount Wachusett Ski Area (Main Lodge) - www.wachusett.com
Princeton, MA

Time:
Prompt start at 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Prerequisite:
A desire to learn, have fun, and to become an NSP instructor. Before coming to class you will need to order and read the Instructor Development manual, which can be ordered through the NSP web site. It is SKU #502, cost is $19.50, and can be found in the Winter Catalog section of the web site under “Instructors Program”.

Logistics:
Class will begin promptly at 6:00 PM; we recommend that you plan on arriving a little early to register and get settled. You will need to bring a notebook and a pen or pencil to take notes with, something to drink, and a snack or two if you haven’t had time for dinner. The class will not go beyond 9:00 pm but participation in both evenings is required to pass the course.

Cost:
You will have to pay for your own ID manual (see above); in addition there may be an EMARI charge for taking the course. (I’ll update this memo when I get more exact information on this.)

Agenda:
The NSP Instructor Development course is made up of 10 Lessons. These lessons cover topics including Instructional Responsibilities; How Adults Learn; Human Relations and Communications, Instructional Management; Learning Levels; Instructor Resources; Instructional Methods; Evaluation and Ongoing Monitoring; and the Six Pack format for NSP training.

The agenda will be provided at the beginning of the class. Each lesson, and the agenda for the 2 days, tends to be flexible and dynamic depending on the class, the instructors, and the exercises the instructors decide to include in that day’s lesson.

Completion:
When completed you will have the basic knowledge to begin building your NSP instructor credentials. Instructor Development is a required course, but is also the only required course, for all of the NSP instructing disciplines.

Expectations:
“Your training has already begun.” (We will explain why we say that when we get together for class.) Please BE SURE to read and review the ID manual before coming to class: We will be moving through them rapidly.

Registration:
If you would like to register for Instructor Development, please email Chris Fletcher at the address listed below. Be sure to give me your name, your mailing address (the post office kind), the mountain you patrol at, and a phone number where you can be reached. As a way of introducing yourself, also please tell me why you are interested in taking Instructor Development, and tell me one interesting fact about yourself.

CD-Based
Instructor Development Course:

For patrollers that aren’t able to attend the 2-evening class there is also a CD-based Instructor Development course that is available on the NSP web site. I strongly recommend that if you want to become an OEC, S&T, or MTR instructor you try to attend the classroom version of the course instead of the CD version. The CD version is accepted by NSP National as meeting the ID requirement, and also counts as a Senior elective, but the classroom is much more comprehensive, more fun, and will better prepare you to become an NSP instructor. If you decide the CD version is for you, however, you can order the CD over the NSP website, take the course on your own, and I will then administer the final exam and work on a mentoring plan with you. Be sure to let me know in advance so that I can register you for the ID/CD course through NSP.

Questions:
Questions about the course -- how to register, what to read, how to find Mount Wachusett, etc. - can be directed to the EMARI Regional ID Advisor, Chris Fletcher.
